How to Get Started

So you want to join MEAD! Now what?

You're going to need a character. What a character has is stats (to affect the world) and phys reps (that represents the things he affects the world with), but what a character is...is freedom! Your character's personality and background is there for you to do with what you like. What will he be like? What has happened in the past? What is important and what is not? These are all questions that only you can answer.

You are probably going to need someone to watch your back and for that you'll want in game friends. That's where factions come in. If you're part of a faction, the other members of that faction will hopefully watch your back!

Our world already has a number of player factions that you can join, or you can make your own faction or play as an independent. Remember though, an independant is just that.... independent!

First, you need a view of our world. Are you ready for a wall of text? Here is is:

Player's Guide to Meadal

If you're looking to play a courtier, here's a bit more:

Meadal Courtier's Primer

Heh, that was quite a lot of text! Ready to create your character yet? Well, let's start with the questions:

What Are Your Character's Best Qualities?
- What do people admire about you? (honour, courage, friendliness, honesty)

What Are Your Character's Worst Qualities?
- Describe your bad habits and vices (dishonest, rude, drinks too much, nervous, pushy, vengeful).

Does Your Character Have Mannerisms or Quirks?
- Mannerisms are excellent ways to get a handle on a character. Does your character stroke his moustache when in thought? Does she tilt her head to the side when angry? Does he tap his foot incessantly? Does he always scream when rushing into a fight? Does she stare directly at someone when talking to them? Does he commonly use the same phrase or saying? Does she have an accent or unusual speech pattern?

What Will Your Character Risk his Life For?
- Your principles or values? A friend or loved one? A treasured possession? The chance to earn fame and glory? Saving a life? To protect your culture? Nothing?

What Action Does Your Character Regret Most?
- Participating in a war? Did you commit a crime? Leaving your homeland? Ending a friendship? The first time you slew a man? Perhaps you have no regrets?

What Are Your Character's Goals?
- What your character wishes to accomplish in life can have a large impact on his actions. Do you wish to become a noble? Do you want fame and glory? Do you desire great wealth? Do you want to become the most powerful mage in Meadal?

Additional Questions

If you get stuck, feel free to ask questions on the forums: Forums or to contact registration@meadsa.co.za (admin related queries) or characters@meadsa.co.za (character concept related queries)

If you want to play a restricted race (marked with an R in the rulebook) please contact characters@meadsa.co.za and include your character concept.

Remember to mail your character's history to characters@meadsa.co.za This makes sure your character fits into the world and brings your character to plot's attention. Plot's attention may not be gentle, but it's always fun :)

Do bear in mind that to join a faction you should be polite and contact the head of the faction to make sure your character fits in with the rest of the characters in that faction. characters@meadsa.co.za will be able to tell you who to contact. Characters are also the ones who need approve your character background anyway, so it might be a good idea to contact them as soon as you have a rough concept worked out.

We're looking forward to seeing you at the next event! Keep an eye out here: Events to see when that is.
